Fern Pendant

Description: Necklace featuring real Hawaiian Hapuʻu fern leaf at actual size and natural green color;  attaches with adjustable braided black silk cord. The colors generally are consistent with the photographs, but as with other natural products, may vary slightly according to the season and the age of the fern leaves when cut from the parent plant.

The braided cord length can be varied from 12 inches (approx 30 cm) to 28 inches (approx 70 cm) by pulling on the cord at the back, one direction to lengthen it, the opposite way to shorten it. The lengths of three pendant sizes are measured from the bottom of the black glass bead to the tip of the leaf. By the very nature of what they are made from all measurements are approximate.

Artist’s Notes:

Visually: The tips of our Hapuʻu leaves are distinctive with each of their delicate saw-toothed edges tapering symmetrically to a fine point. These leaves are real, not synthetic replicas. They do not come from any machine-controlled process and hence no two will be quite the same. Your pendant will be unique to you.

Some pendants will have wide leaves at the top, others be longer and tapering. The “teeth” of the serrated edges alternate on either side of a thin central spine or stem, but irregularly. Very few leaves will be straight. In some the pointed tip may be curled off-center which is part of then authentic charm of our Rainforest Collection. Suitable for all ages and personality styles from nature lovers to urban extroverts, they particularly compliment these same fern leaves as earrings.

Practically: Size of fashion accessories is important for every wearer. To that end, we offer our Hapuʻu pendants in three sizes shown here. (Actual measurements shown with each picture). They can be small and delicate worn over a fine silk or satin blouse or high neck casual wear as an understatement, or, alternatively, long pointed tapering style just right for emphasizing a plunging neckline. Their physical strength and flexibility ensures they can be worn with confidence. Nevertheless they must also be worn with some practical considerations in mind; sleeping with them on is not recommended (that risks hair becoming entangled with the Hapuʻu which in turn will be distorted by movements of the head; removing one’s hair from the serrated edges must be done with care to avoid either breaking hair strands or the serrated teeth of the leaf).

Our Bold Fern Pendants are made from Hapuʻu – Hawaiian Tree Fern

The largest ferns in Hawaiʻi, (Cibotium glaucum and C. menziesii). From the coastal sea level up to about 1500 ft elevation, they grow up to 25 ft. high with 9 ft. long fronds (leaves). They grow less tall higher up, especially above 4,800 ft. Hapuʻu (pronounced “hapoo-oo”) grow sparsely throughout all the Hawaiian Islands except in the rainforest conditions of Volcano and Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, where they are abundant and spectacular. They are endemic to Hawaiʻi.

The pithy core was a staple in times of food shortages; medicinal uses included blood purifying and alleviating joint stiffness, chest and muscle pains. Outer trunk fibers were for basketry, softer fibers (pulu) were used as cushioning in pillows and mattresses, and for absorption and drying.

Hapuʻu grows either rooted in the ground or, when lodged into other plants or trees, living from nutrients solely taken from the rain and air around them. Many beautiful Hapuʻu grow on our studio grounds. We only cut our small requirements from living healthy plants that quickly regrow, hence our product is self sustaining. No plants are destroyed or die from our harvesting. There is nothing quite like our natural accessories and jewelry as they are designed to remain very close in appearance and flexibility to the original live flowers or plants and yet be practical to wear on a long term continuous basis. This is particularly so with our Hapuʻu all being of their original color and flexibility, not fashion color items.

Our Hapuʻu fern leaves have been treated with the same preservative as our orchids shown elsewhere on this site. However the method of application has been adjusted to best suit the structure of the fern leaf, which is more fibrous, and has a spine down the center length. Nevertheless they are durable, pliable, virtually weightless and certainly practical to wear.

All Real Flower Jewelry is crafted to the highest quality standards by the inventor and primary artisan of RFJ himself, Peter J Honeyman. For more information about this product, and the processes we use, check out our answers to our frequently asked questions.
